Of the 68 indigenous groups in Colombia the Guambino are the most immediately recognisable and the ones who have most effectively survived colonialism with their dress, customs and language intact. Every Tuesday they descend on the small town of Silvia to meet, chat and trade in their market. Getting photographs of these shy, proud and hierarchical people is difficult but I managed one or two. See the photo stream. From there it was a 14 hour bus journey over the border to Ecuador. I was sad to leave Colombia and its wonderful people.
I was impressed by the Ecuador military who fight a continual war to stop their country being used as a trafficking route for Colombian drugs. Shortly after crossing the border and getting on a bus it was stopped by soldiers . I was the only gringo on board and was hauled off with my rucksack and completely searched and questioned. I complemented them on a good job done and we discussed the fortunes of Manchester United.
