We felt Wyoming was going to be all about the scenery, and it was. Yellowstone and the Grand Teton National Parks take up a huge chunk of the state, then add in Bighorn National Park and then add in all the state forests that surround the National Parks, there's not a lot of state left. We had booked a campsite at Bridge Bay on Yellowstone Lake, if you want a site in Yellowstone you need to book. We entred from the southeast which took us through the Teton NP and over Togwotee Pass at 9658 feet. From the pass we had a magnificent view of the Teton mountains with their snow capped craggy ridges, it was quite a spectacle. We then turned north and headed up into Yellowstone. As we headed into Yellowstone we couldn't believe the amount of snow around, there were places along the sides of the road where the snow was two metres high and when we passed Lewis Lake it was completely frozen! When we got to Yellowstone Lake a good portion of it was also frozen, surprisingly it wasn't that cold, around 15°. We had planned on two days in and around the area taking in as many of the scenic routes and tourist sights as we could. Day one had us heading south through the Teton NP again, to Jackson, then over Teton Pass into Idaho, north and back into Yellowstone NP via West Yellowstone and back to camp, a short 285 mile ride. The Teton Mountains were truly breath taking, we had hoped that they would also look spectacular from the west in Idaho, but we couldn't really get a good look at them. The next day we took in routes around Yellowstone. This route took us past some of the falls on the Yellowstone River, hot bubbling springs and mud pools and to the famous Old Faithful. I should mention that they had had a lot of snow and rain in the area, so all the rivers were full to overflowing and the falls were magnificent. On our first night in Yellowstone we were very excited when we spotted a Bison on the side of the road, well today we were treated to herds of Bison on the river flats, they were a magnificent sight to see, there were also mothers with their young. There were so many hot springs and geysers to see, we only selected a few, but we had to see Old Faithful, who isn't so faithful these days, he only goes off every 70-90 minutes, but we called by anyway on the off change we would see him. When we arrived we guessed by the number of people sitting around watching that he must be just about due to erupt, and sure enough, about ten minutes later he went off. From Yellowstone we headed east out over Beartooth Highway and Beartooth Pass at 10947 feet, now here was a lot of snow and some magnificent views. Then it was on through Bighorn NP to South Dakota and the Black Hills National Forest to see the Crazy Horse Monument and Mount Rushmore. We had been told Crazy Horse was really something to see, and it was. We were also lucky enough to meet one of the local Indian elders who put on a show with his son and grandson, it was a very emotional experience. Mount Rushmore was also great to see, but not in the same way as Crazy Horse. Then it was off west again to see Devils Tower, an imposing column of rock, before continuing west back through the northern part of Bighorn NP where we were lucky enough to see some Moose. One mother with her young, Julie was able to get within ten metres of to get photos, it was great. We then took in the Chief Joseph Trail over Dead Indian Pass and back through Yellowstone to head north and into Montana. In Wyoming we have experienced a lot of snow and very cold nights, plus some storms and rain, and we were a little early with some places still closed due to the snow, but the rivers as I said are over flowing and the snow capped mountains wouldn't look the same without the snow, but best of all, the numbers of people are still bearable!
