MeznG. In the air, on the road, river or sea again
Well rested and packed, we store our bags at the hotel and head off again for a few hours. Our transfer to the ship is due to pick us up at 12.55pm so we have a bit more exploring time. We still have time on our hop on hop off bus and 1 more route to do. We now have the subway and trains mastered so this is our preferred mode of transport because as I mentioned earlier, Tokyo is not a walkable city and time is of the essence. The 3rd bus route is to Roppongi and takes in Tokyo Mid-Town, Roppongi Hills Shopping Complex,Azabu Juban Shopping town and Akasaka Sacas entertainment complex. Roppongi's main intersection is the popular 'place to meet' and it comes alive at night with many clubs and bars. Once again we get very little commentary as the guide is only speaking Japanese and the amusing thing is that there are no Japanese people on the bus! There is the ever present threat of rain but it is quite warm and because we are on an open top bus we are given very beautiful rain coats. Same plastic as a poncho you get at the footy but it has sleeves and go yes right to the ground. We look like ghosts but at least we shouldn't get wet. I'm sure it's because we put them on that the rain never came! It's Sunday so the streets are fairly quiet but the parks are very busy with families enjoying time together. The little children are so cute and inquisitive. Quite a few people ride pushbikes and they have seats on the front and back for the children. The housing is quite condensed, mostly high rise apartment style in the city so the number of people per square metre would be maximized. From the outside, the apartments certainly don't look very big. Back at the hotel after seamless travel on the trains and subway, we wait for our transfer and he turns up right on time. The drive to the port of Yokohama us about an hour depending on traffic. We get another great look at the city and some of the outer lying areas on this drive. We pass over different areas of housing, looks like small 3 or 4 storey wooden houses built very very close together and maybe even joined. The streets are very narrow like lanes. This area around the Harbour is very industrial and it's possible that this housing is for the workers in the factories. Most of the communities have at least 1 baseball diamond equipped with lights. We are on the expressway which is above the housing and rail lines. The transport infrastructure is so complex! Yokohama looks on the surface to be a lovely city and the Harbour is very pretty and the cruise ship has drawn quite a crowd of onlookers. The boarding process is so smooth, no lines, no waiting, no issues. We are on board and in our cabin within 15 minutes of arriving at the dock. Our cabin....wowsers. It's lovely. We have a mini suite so we have a sitting room as well as the bedroom and a nice wide deck, 2 tv's, I guess that's one each....only 1 remote though! What we have seen of the ship so far, we are very impressed. Our cabin steward us Romel from the Philippines and he brings us a glass each of bubbles to celebrate our arrival. We take it on our balcony and toast the people on the dock. For a quick lunch we have a slice of pizza by the pool before we go to check out the fitness centre which is very impressive with probably 20 treadmills and steppers, rowing machines and all the usual weight stuff. Before we set sail we have the safety briefing which must be done but is quite boring. Luckily our muster station is in the theatre so we are seated and in air conditioning. Because this ship is cruising out of Japan, every announcement is translated into Japanese so the safety drill takes twice as long! As we set sail we have beers and cocktails watching Yokohama light up and fade into the distance. It us a beautiful sight. We have a late dinner seating and meet our dinner companions Stuart and Roberta from Bondi for the first time. I think there should be 2 other people joining us but they did not show last night. The food was very nice and the company enjoyable. We take look at the show after dinner but once again it gets a bit drawn out as all the presentations are repeated in Japanese. Back in our cabin, the bed has been turned down, there are chocolates on our pillows. So very spoilt! Tomorrow is a sea day so maybe a bit more exploring of the ship.
