Whilst queuing for the Barcelona to Mahon ferry the dogs attracted quite a lot of attention from the Spanish holiday makers. Especially the family in the car in front of us who were chatting with us for at least 1/2 hour prior to boarding. They were from Girona and were also travelling to Menorca for their holiday. They were telling us about how the Game of Thrones was currently been filmed close to their home. They even ended up being our next door neighbours on the ferry.
Boarding commenced at 22:30, to our surprise it was very quiet. Just four lorries and a single queue of cars on the Port and Starboard sides of the ferry. The other two decks were completely empty. The rules stated that the dogs needed to be muzzled whilst boarding and transporting them to the kennels, but we pushed our luck by not putting them on as the dogs have never worn muzzle's. Again it was very lacks and none of the staff stopped us. A quick visit to the main information deck onboard issued us with a key for the dog kennel ( 5 Euro refundable deposit and our cabin room key. We were expecting the cages and kennels to be in an air conditioned room below deck as stated on the Internet. However on this ferry, the Snav Adriatico the cages were situated at the stern of the ferry out on deck. We much preferred this option as this enabled us to visit the dogs at any time during the 8 1/2 hour crossing. The dogs shared a large cage in which we put in bedding and a bowl of water.
We then checked out our four berth cabin which was surprisingly spacious. It was complete with En-Suite with shower, Sea view room and the bottom bunks were good enough the size of a double bed, hence us only using three of the beds! The kids had the top bunks, which would also easily accommodate an adult.
The ferry departed at 23:00, exactly on time. After a quick tour of the boat we ended up in the bar. There were 3 restaurants onboard all open until 23:30 for Evening meals, which seemed a bit ridiculous considering that there couldn't have been 100 people on this huge ferry. Just one would have been sufficient. We called it a night around 1am and considering Vickys concerns regarding Sea sickness we all had a great nights sleep but again we didn't get a full nights sleep.
I was up for 6:30 AM, as I wanted to see the coast line of Menorca as we approached Mahon. I was surprised to see how close we were, we had already passed Fornells. By the time I was up dressed and checked on the dogs, we were entering the port of Mahon. I got some great pictures of the coast line with the sun rising on the horizon, Mahón has one of the largest natural harbours in the world: 5 km (3.1 mi) long and up to 900 metres (2,953 feet) wide. We were really pleased with the dogs, after all that time in the cage there was no mess and we were soon all back in the car ready to disembark.
At 07:30 AM we drove onto Mahon dock and cleared the police control checkpoint, by simply being waved through. In just a few minutes time we will be arriving at our final destination :) yippee!!!!!! :)
