Day two in KL! We begun our day up the road in a local restaurant with a traditional Malaysian breakfast, Roti Canai and Roti Pinang. They are Indian type flatbreads, almost a cross between a naan and a crepe, served with different curry sauces. The Pinang one has sweet banana sliced in it which is a nice contrast to the sauces. Surprisingly, we thoroughly enjoyed them! At 1.40 Malaysian Ringgit (25p) each, you can't really go wrong in any case!
We chose to explore the city on foot today. With all of the skyscrapers and trains, walking around KL reminds us of New York City at times which is quite bizarre. But of course you then see something which is distinctly Asian and you remember where you are!
After breakfast we headed to the famous Merdeka Square. Here a giant Malaysian flag flies high as independence was declared there in 1957. The square itself consists of a cricket pitch, which the English used during their rule. It's odd seeing the mixture of buildings surrounding the square, from gothic English architecture to mosques to the skyscrapers in the background.
Next stop was the KL Central Market, an indoors, air-conditioned affair (thank heavens - it's sweltering walking around in 34 degree humidity!). After a few souvenir stops and lunch in the food court, we continued on to Petaling Street, Chinatown. We were amazed at the spot on designer handbags and clothes lining the streets; if only we had Mary Poppins' type backpacks and could shop away!
Although our time in KL ends tomorrow morning thus has been short and sweet, we have been pleasantly surprised at what a wonderful city it is and how much we have enjoyed it.
