After Yoga (Steph) and a Kecak fire and trance show in Ubud we headed by fast boat to Gili, Lombok. Gili consists of three small islands that are very close together. We stayed on the main island, Gili Trawangan, for 4 nights. The laid back, friendly Indonesian culture is visible across the island. Similar to Koh Phi-Phi, the Gilis don't have any vehicles but they do have tuk-tuks here by way of a horse and cart.
On our first full day we did a snorkelling trip of the three islands. Starting just across the way at Bounty Wreck, from the surface we could see a gigantic pontoon that had sunk and been disturbed by a hurricane many years ago. The coral has grown around it so it was quite cool to see. On our second stop, one of the local crew jumped in and guided is around the area. It was amazing to see him swim to depths of over 10 meters on a single breath to point out different sea life.
It was inevitable that we had to put our Padi licence to use in the turtle capital of the world. So yesterday, we joined a dive at 9am heading to Shark Point. This dive was very different to Koh Tao; the dive place set up all our gear for us and loaded it onto the boat - it felt like five star treatment! The boat was a small single storey affair as opposed to a double decker. To enter into the water, we had to do a backwards roll off the side. Soon enough we were descending to Shark Point.
We were rather eager to see some reef sharks, but unfortunately there were none around. The current is very strong here, creating a drift dive. The visibility is about 20 meters, the clearest we've experienced. Instead of sharks, the first exciting thing we saw was a reef octopus that changed colour when it saw us coming. Minutes later, we caught a glimpse of our first Green Turtle swimming along so peacefully. Then we lost count of the turtles we saw, numerous of both types - Hawksbill and Green Turtles. They are magnificent!
We enjoyed our first dive so much that after a bite to eat, we headed out on the second afternoon dive to Turtle Heaven. Guess what we saw lots of?! We were blown away with the beauty of diving at Gili.
Time to move on once again, we have now arrived at our hotel in Kuta for our last leg in Bali.
