First and foremost, a big happy birthday to Luke from Cambodia! Have a good one buddy.
Today we did the grand circuit tour of the temples. The first stop was Ta Prohm, the temple where Tomb Raider was filmed and the roots of the trees have grown around the stone. Next we went to Pr. Prerup, Eastern Mebon, Neak Pean and Prah Khan. The architecture and magnitude of the temples is magnificent but is was tough walking around them in 33 degree heat.
Once back at the hostel, we strolled to town for a late lunch. We had a Khmer bbq - a fun experience. You have a bbq device in front of you which you pour a vegetable stock around the moat part and fill it when vegetables to boil. When nearly done, you add the noodles. In the centre, you bbq the fresh meat prepared for you in small baskets. There was six types of meat altogether: chicken, pork, beef, crocodile, fish and squid. It came with three tasty Khmer sauces.
Down Pub Street we had a few draught beers for 50cent each. After this, feeling a bit peckish again, we jumped in a tuk-tuk for a surprisingly short journey to the Hard Rock Cafe Angkor. As we were feeling a bit nostalgic we sat outside watching the sun go down with a nice cocktail and portion of proper home chips and Heinz ketchup.
After sunset we came back to the rooftop bar at our hostel to enjoy yet another 50cent draught beer and upload our photos to the iPad. The bartender from last night, Chanra, has improved his beer pouring skills and taken on Max's advice from yesterday to chop the head off the top of the beer. We bought Chanra a beer so he sat chatting to us for the evening. He's only been learning English for the last month, has 5 brothers and a sister and his aspiration is to save up, have a family (as 'no money, no honey' - his words) and take them on a holiday to Bangkok. Chanra has never been out of Siem Reap yet he is one of the happiest and most smiley person we have met along our journey.
This really makes you appreciate the opportunities that we have, as British or even European people. We take a vacation at the drop of a hat, but it's something that Cambodian people are unlikely to ever afford. Our first stop of travelling 12 countries was Bangkok, the one place that Chanra hopes to go in his lifetime.
We also found out that the hostel where we're staying has only been open for 2 months. It was an upgrade from a smaller place and they will soon be building a swimming pool. It's fantastic so if you're reading this and going to Siem Reap, stay here - Blossoming Romduol Lodge!
Day 3 at the temples tomorrow (the big finale) so it's 9p.m. now and we're going to have a very early night.
