This morning was very sad for us, we said goodbye to wonderful Siem Reap and what has felt like our home. As the bus pulled away, we had different people waving goodbye to us.
We're definitely starting to feel like travellers now. After we get to know a place and get comfortable, we're moving on to somewhere new. At our hostel for the past few days, they have been greeting us with 'welcome home'.
We jumped on a 7 hour bus to take us through Cambodia's beautiful countryside and a few provinces to the capital city, Phnom Penh.
It was definitely an experience travelling down National Routes 5 and 6 in Cambodia. Driving on the wrong side of the road is the norm, and with sparse tarmac, it was a very rickety, dusty journey.
Our tuk-tuk driver in Siem Reap, Jiva, arranged for a friend who is also a tuk-tuk driver to pick us up from the bus station. When we arrived in Phnom Penh after 6 hours driving and an hour worth of stops, true to his word, there he was with a sign for 'Max and Cannon'. He took us straight to Flamingos Hotel which we had booked.
Phnom Penh seems to be a bigger, busier version of Siem Reap with less of a community feel. After we had checked in, we had a stroll down to the riverside to find some dinner. On the way, we passed through a night market. We saw some fish on a table next to some fish heads and as we walked past, the fish started to flap around - still alive.
Once we found the riverside, we settled for a restaurant called 'On the Corner' as it was pretty full so must be good. We both tried a new Khmer dish each: red and green curries. We were shocked at the prices - the beer was 10cent more expensive than in Siem Reap at 60cent a glass!
We're now back at the hotel planning our next few days in the capital.
