Our first night we had collapsed into the Santa Clara's restaurant for quick pizzas (muy deliciosa) and some great desserts. After some of us not sleeping for 30 hours, not too willing to venture out.
Sunday was to be another pool day and when I typically run for groceries/goods and explore. I find the local Exito department store on foot and buy water, snacks, coffee, fruit, and some basic sandwich goods plus a panini-maker. After the lunch/dinner/breakfast at the hotel, we experience the Cartagena price effect of a UNESCO World Heritage resort city. More expensive than eating in US hotels/restaurants. Groceries certainly not much better. In bags I can carry from the Exito, I have $160 worth of water, cereal, and yogurt.
The sun was HOT ! Tengo Sed ! We have some frozen drinks in hotel, dress for dinner and jump on the first carriage outside. The Old city clip-clop of horses and period coaches is constant. The tour is $40 and the driver calls out all the plazas in town. For 30 minute ride, its worth it. The girls get a sense of the lively town squares, the picturesque buildings, and we see places we want to return to on foot.
We return to the Santa Clara and then walk on foot back to a restaurant I read about in TripAdvisor - Cafe San Pedro. Its in a pretty square next to San Pedro Church. The waiter, Martin, es "muy simpatico" and shares pictures of his daughter ( named Ashleigh!!). The food is outstanding...very eclectic - Asian, French, Caribbean I have Singapore Prawn Rice, KT has Salmon grills with tropical fruit, Lyn has tenderloin w/ bourdeaux sauce, and Ashleigh has Teriyaki Beef.
The square is filled with entertainers / performers through dinner to get our attention. From beat-box dancers to a still creepy mime in black-face with chains and shredded clothes. who makes strange sucking sounds and looks like a zombie from Thriller video. He is representing the history of Cartagena being the largest slave-trading center of the West Indies. Girls aren't too thrilled.
We say goodbye to Martin and vow to return.
