After a sad day visit to the infamous S-21 (Tuol Sleng) & the killing fields of Choeung Ek around Phnom Penh i was shocked to see what i did, the story of this tragic time in Cambodian history started around 1975 when a menace by the name of Pol Pot and his army of murders the Khmer Rouge stormed the goverment and ordered all people's who where educated/teachers/students/politicians/tradesmen and goverment officials and many more innocent lives to be sent to a school which was then made into a jail, the jail which is now called S-21 was a place where Pol Pot's men brought so much pain and hurt to the Cambodian's and several westerners, Pol Pot's crazed mind was to destroy anybody who was educated in anyway, destroy all religious buildings, money was to be destroyed and he wanted to start a new Cambodian life by even starting the year from 0 also, he forced is own people into working in the fields and feeding them nothing, many lives where lost here and in his prison & killing fields, he was a evil man who got away with his crimes by dying in 1997 i think, the S-21 prison was so sad with all 20,000 victims who where locked away here only 7 survived, the total death toll of his regime was around 2 million lives, the pictures of the poor victims where on boards to show the world this sad story, baby's faces with their mothers who just lived normal lives before Pol Pot arrived, he interogated everyone who was there to get information about another person they could get to, these where not enemy's but innocent people of Cambodia who where murdered by children aged 13 onwards ordered by Pol Pot, from the prison where they might have spent up 2 a year they where then gathered onto a truck and sent 15km to the killing fields where they would sadly be executed in terrible ways, walking around the area the graves still stand there and even peoples cloths still scattered around the area, it was so sad to see, those poor children/mothers/family's lives ending in 1 mans crazy-vision, the killing fields have a hugh memorial dedicated to all who lost their lives to the Khmer Rouge which is thousands of skulls within a Wat at the grounds, i left these places feeling so sorry for the innocents who suffered at the hands of Pol Pot and the Khmer Rouge, then in 1979 the Vietnamese liberated Cambodia and Pol Pot and his cowards ran and remained in hiding, even no they are still finding high ranking Kymer Rouge leaders who are on trail still to this day. Whilst travelling around Cambodia i respect the people who have had so much hurt in the past, but the spirit of the people is amazing, they are so friendly and willing to help when they can, a real genuine people in my opinion, the nation is slowly building itself up again and good luck to them.
