If there was one city on my trip where everything was a bit of a blur, it'd probably be KL. I was in and out like a shot, it seemed. Having said that, I actually spent a fair amount of time there...
I arrived by coach in early afternoon and found the hostel fairly quickly. I then pored over some travel docs to get inspiration and unloaded my dirty laundry at the hostel reception. Went immediately to a bus station to book tickets to Singapore and the only one available was a coach at midnight in two days. My plane to Oz was early on the fourth day, but I had no choice. More cheap food and some photos and I was done for the day.
Next day I got up early (6:30am) to have breakfast and leave the hostel for the Petronas Towers. There was no giant queue to be found. Very quickly I discovered that this was because all the tickets had gone. So I wandered around the gardens and to KL Tower, hoping to get to the revolving restaurant for tea, but they were fully booked. Not a great start to the day! I went to the old quarter north of the twin towers for a massive buffet meal for less than 2 quid. I even ate without my fingers like a true local! Then back to the hostel to regroup after my tower failures. Decided to go to Chinatown and look around, sampling the cuisine and haggling down the price of a wallet before I decided I didn't want it. Quick look around the colonial centre of the city and that finished me off. I've also managed to recover my mini hard drive after it got a virus from Chiang Mai. Satisfying.
I was a lazy arse on my final day, getting up at 8am of all times. Packing somehow took forever and I went to the Batu caves which I found distinctly underwhelming. Still, the sun was out and I was looking forward to my booking for high tea at KL Tower in the afternoon. I didn't spend long at the caves and was back in my hostel with plenty of time, and then something astonishing happened. I ironed a T-shirt. For the first time in my travels, I ironed my clothes, in preparation for my restaurant meal. And what a meal...
I spent two hours eating some of the best food I've had in Malaysia. Granted, the meat was still on the bone and you had to do the usual checks before eating, but combined with the view I had a fantastic time. If anyone goes to KL, you should book in at the revolving restaurant. The buffet continued with seemingly unlimited desserts and coffee for two hours. I don't remember the last time I ate so much! And all for about 12 quid. And THEN, as if that wasn't enough, the ticket included access to the observation deck, usually 8 quid in itself. I waited for a long time for the sun to set and was treated to a daytime, twilight and evening view of the city. Amazing.
And then there was the coach. The midnight coach to Singapore. I had lots of snacks from my last few ringgits and we set off roughly on time. The joy!
