Well there was always going to be someone who'd be late for the bus, and with Max getting in at 5am and me sleeping at 3am, you wouldn't have got great odds on correctly guessing it'd be us.
The bus took us to the train station where we hopped onto the 8:40 day train to Yichang. Mine and Max's grand plan to get a quick McDonald's (yes, entirely traditional - you have no idea how many McDonald's there are in Chinese cities) was scuppered by us waking up far too late. With no food on us barring the usual plethora of sweet pastries, which were my lunch, we got some frankly horrible bottle of milk and pineapple juice that tasted like I'd imagine a bottle of fresh milk would taste had I bought it before leaving London. Not one to waste money, I forced it down and slept on my bed. Yes, beds on a day train. They're cheaper, apparently.
I felt a bit more alive when I woke at 11 and spent the rest of the day whiling the hours away reading about China's history while trying not to fall asleep. I challenge anyone to achieve that. Oh, and Steve will be pleased to here I played LOTS of Angry Birds during the 15 hours we spent on that train.
A thing I've learnt today: vegetarianism is barely a concept for any Chinese person. I learnt this after gesticulating wildly at the train noodle-lady while pointing at the symbol we thought meant "meat" and having her stare blankly back at me like I'd just shat on her kitchen floor.
