After our last night around the campfire in the Cameron Highlands and a few beers we managed to miss our bus to Penang in the morning, not through over sleeping, we just thought the bus was later than it was! Matt came to the rescue and managed to find another bus and after a sprint down the main road with our backpacks we hopped aboard and made our way to Penang.
Virgil and Lonneke were already there so we were looking forward to meeting up with them at some point. The afternoon that we arrived we walked around the town and familiarised ourselves with our new home for the next few days. It is an old port city in Malaysia with lots of history of invasions so we went to visit Fort Cornwallis and some of the colonial buildings.
We went to see the chinese clan floating villages on the sea, Chinese immigrants came here in the 19th century and made the clans to help them get used to their new environment and they are still there. Tourists can walk freely among the floating streets and you really get a chance to see the way the people live there.
The best thing about Penang besides the architecture was definitely the food, it is known as one of the best food destinations in the world. We would certainly agree, we ate at Indian, Malaysian and Chinese local places and the food was out of this world and cheep as chips!!!
Our guesthouse was in the Chinese quarter of town and we stayed in a place called W&O - thanks to a recommendation from Robert and Fran on Tioman :-) It was an old Chinese shophouse with very tall ceilings and the guy who ran it was so very friendly, we enjoyed staying there.
On our second night we met up with Virgil and Lonneke and spent the night in a local bar sat outside drinking beer and playing Uno, we ended up going back to their guesthouse to finish the game, Matt lost again!
We have decided to spend our last few days in Malaysia on an island called Langkawi, our friend from Tioman, Triff, is there and we are very much looking forward to spending some time with him and meeting up with Virgil and Lonneke AGAIN!!! A wonderful way to say good bye to Asia.
