From Lake Toba we booked a minivan to take us to Medan Airport ready to fly Air Asia to Kuala Lumpur. It was only an hour flight and a very easy journey again. We were sad to leave Indonesia, some great memories there.
We arrived in KL (as the locals call it) at night but we knew it was going to be a special city just from our taxi ride to the hotel from the airport. The road from the airport to the city centre was a motorway and we were treated to seeing the Petronas Towers and the Kuala Lumpur tower all lit up amongst other sky scrapers with televisions on the side.
On waking up the next morning we went off to explore. It is a very futuristic city and we couldn't helped but be very impressed. The transport is amazing, with an light railway system and a monorail, all for about 25p per journey and extremely easy to use. The day we arrived was Malaysia day and we saw lots of different celebrations in the street with so many different people. The multicultural environment is impressive in itself as everyone gets on and is very friendly. It works so well and is unlike anything we've experienced. There are Malaysian flags everywhere, their independence in 1957 is obviously very important to them.
We took a taxi on our second day and the driver was Malay Indian. His sons and daughter had studied in London and he was telling us how thankful he is for the British coming to Malaysia. He showed us some of the buildings the Bristish built and said we have a lot to be proud of, inspiring stuff!
We stayed in Little India and had some great food around our hotel. We visited gigantic shopping malls, some of which have theme parks on the top floor including roller coasters. You could spend a week walking around them (if that's your cup of tea!). The city has some old buildings like the central market that are kept well and the new builds seem to complement the old, all very well done. Even the graffiti is tasteful! The old train station and cricket green look like home - see pics.
We visited the Petronas Towers on a tour, they are twin towers with a skybridge linking them on floors 42 and 43. You'll remember the towers from the film 'Entrapment' amongst other things. When they were built in 1998 they were the tallest buildings in the world. We got to walk across the skybridge, a bit scary but the views were amazing. We saw a window cleaner on the bridge dangling in a box on a wire, nice job if you're not scared of heights, he posed for a few photos too! The guide then took us up to the 83rd floor for some more spectacular views. Definitley worthwhile doing. At the bottom we found some model F1 cars and you'll see Matt giving them a thumbs down. Quite ironic considering we now know Lewis is off there next season, lol!
To sum KL up we had a great time, enjoying being in a place which was like home but in some ways better. Our next stop is Singapore for the F1 Grand Prix so although we would like to stay longer something much more exciting is just around the corner!
