Still raining in the morning we made pancakes to try and cheer ourselves up a bit, its a good job today was mainly going to be driving. Our plan was to make it up to the Abel Tasman National Park for the night. The drive between Greymouth and Westport was amazing. Twisting hair pin bends leading down to the sea then along the rugged west coast line with the waves crashing meters away from the road. Along the way we stopped off at Punakaiki to check out the Pancake Rocks. We were just expecting some funny shaped rocks, but we got a pleasant surprise. Walking down the path towards the sea we kept hearing what we thought was thunder, then all of a sudden with a big crash and a bang and we were sprayed with loads of water! The path took us right past a massive blow hole. As we got closer to the ocean we came across the Pancake Rocks. They are a strange geological formation that baffle geologists, no one really knows how they formed. They really do look like pancakes piled up on top of each other. There was also a massive surge pool and a few more blow holes making themselves known every time one of the huge swells hit the rocks. We didn't make it all the way to Abel Tasman, instead we decided to stop at a DOC site in Kawatiri along the way and check the weather in the morning to see if it was worth going or not, as it sounds like quite a weather dependent place.
