Da Lat turned out to be a nice trip away from the heat but unfortunately not from the rain. Da Lat is in the Central Highlands so much cooler so we were all in jumpers, socks and leggings which seemed odd for the middle of asia! But it also means that they can grow strawberries! We decided to do a motorcycle tour of the surrounding countryside so we could get to see a bit of Vietnam that is off the tourist trail. Me and Kat were on the back of a guide's bike each and the boys shared a moped because they wanted to drive themselves (Thought I'd tell you after I'd done it mum so you couldn't worry!).
Despite the pouring rain it was well worth it. If I'd have known how cool it was I would have done way more of Vietnam on motorbike because you get to see so much more than you do on the tourist trail. The first day we spent a lot of time driving through stunning countryside, we met some ethnic minority people that have their own language, we stopped for the best food we've had in Vietnam yet and we got to see the fattest, drunkest, laziest pig in the world (probably) pictures on facebook! The owner of the pig makes rice wine out of fermented steamed rice. After its been used to make the wine they just feed it to the pig which gets really drunk and just lies around eating and getting fat which in turn means its huge and fetches them more money. It was quite a sight!
Probably the best part of the drive for me (apart from the views obviously) was the smells! It seemed like each corner you turned you'd smell something different (and usually what you've eaten along the way), Chili, grapes, celery and jasmine were among the strongest. We stopped got to stop by quite a few fruit plantations and tasted some passionfruit of the tree. I've never seen dragonfruit, watermelon or passionfruit actually on the bushes until now. At one stop we made to stretch our legs there was a group of boys around 7-8 years old and they'd made a mini pool table out of the soil and were playing with marbles and little cane sticks. Very cool.
The second day was quite similar to the first except we drove a different way, Willsy and Simon did manage to fall of their bike once, but it was only a minor accident as they just slipped in the mud. All in all, motorbiking through Vietnam thoroughly recommended!
On a side note, Willsy is convinced that he has a worm! Basically he really likes the food in Vietnam so his appetite has really come back with avengance after China. Everytime he's really hungry he says "the worm" and anytime anyone says "i don't know why i'm hungry" its "i've given you the worm". The other day he ate so much (6 meals in total) that he had to lie on the cold tile floors in our bathroom for about half an hour so he wasn't sick saying "its the worm, its the worm". ITS DEFINITELY NOT A WORM!
