Im not sure of facts and figures, but i think Iguazu Falls is the biggest waterfall in the world. This is pretty much all we knew about it before we arrived, and we were absolutely blown away!
We worked out our route through the park (huge in itself) and made a couple of short treks around the top of some of the falls first (it isnt one waterfall but 275 individual ones), through the steamy and sweaty jungle coming across many lizards, iguanas, coatis and enourmous spiders on our way. Then to the bottom of the side falls (cant remember all the names but basically its like a big U shape, with the best and biggest falls towards the middle of the U) and across on a free ferry to an island in the middle for even better views. But where was the spray?! We were so so hot and staring at this incredible gushing gleaming cold water really didnt cool us down as for some unknown reason the spray didnt reach any of the paths or lookout points, so we remained sweaty and not in the least cooled down.
We had purposefully saved the Garganta del Diablo (The Devils Throat) until the end of our day; this is the biggest of all the falls, and man was it big. We heard it before we saw it as we approached from the side through the jungle on the metal catwalks erected to allow you close access (the river that makes up the falls is something like 4 miles wide all in all). It really didnt dissapoint, we literally gasped as we saw it, this huge huge huge thundering cascade of water, it truly looked like we had arrived at the edge of the world. Watching the water fall over the edge made you feel as if you were falling down, and looking down to the bottom was just a canvas of white spray and mist. We were very pleased this was our last waterfall in South America, as nothing will ever come close again.
Our original travel plan included going to Rio de Janeiro in Brazil for the carnaval, but a few months ago we really didnt have enough money to go and enjoy it properly, so would have to go some other time. We were pretty gutted about missing out this weekend, especially when our bus to Iguazu stopped at a service station in the middle of the night (two thirds of the way into our 36 hour journey) and we had to watch the Carnaval on a crappy television. But Iguazu made up for that, and was actually worth the journey (the first place in Argentina that really has been so far).
