Hello. Oh dear we have been very slack with our blog lately! We'll try and catch up. Well, after visiting the little coastal town of Yeppoon we continued our road back through Rockhampton and along the coast to Gladstone which was another industrial city. We decided that we wanted to head back down to the beach as the beach towns are so much nicer, and continued to drive through the beautiful Australian countryside and through National Parks to a place that we fancied: Town of 1770/Agnes Water. It has this funny name because it's actually two twin 'towns' which are both really too small to be towns and so they have joined them up to make a sort of town. They are both on the coast and, as so many of the other places we have visited, are absolutely stunning and have amazing views of the coast.
We arrived at about 4pm so it was already heading for night time (the sun goes down so early here as it's 'winter') and drove around looking for somewhere to park for the night. There was quite a lot of distance between the two towns which was funny because we really expected them to be joined together or right next to each other! They were both really quiet as well - because it's winter hardly any tourists are there and so you get the feeling of it being a ghost town. We found a gorgeous beach at Agnes Water where some people were surfing - apparently it's the most northern point in Australia that you can actually surf as there's no surf further north. It was weird seeing surfers again as we hadn't seen any for the past few weeks.
As we drove towards 1770 (so named because that was the year it was discovered, funny that) we passed what looked like a new housing estate, so drove up to have a look. It was really amazing, the streets were palm tree lined and all the houses looked like they had been designed by different people so it was all a mis-match of different styles of houses. The roads were perfect, the lawns perfectly manicured - it really looked like the set of Desperate Housewives!! We then realised that they were all holiday homes and of course no one was there because it's winter!
We found a space to park the van in a little secluded area next to a national park and right near the beach which was beautiful. Matt decided to hire the film 'Supersize Me' which was a big eye opener (we'd never seen it before) and neither of us will ever even think about eating a McDonalds again! We got an early night but were woken up at 2am when a car pulled up right next to us and two French guys were talking loudly outside the van! It's pretty scary when you're asleep, in a van in the middle of nowhere and that happens so we got a bit of a shock!
In the morning we went along to the beach which was really so nice, and watched some of the guys trying to surf. We could really feel the temperature had started to drop as we had a cold shower by the beach. Won't be doing that again! After getting ourselves ready we headed to our next destination: Hervey Bay.
