Seeing the soldiers
Yesterday morning we arrived in Xi-an at 6.50am. We headed straight for the Museum of the Terracotta Warriors and Horses, China's greatest archaeological attraction. Basically Qinshi Huangdi (the first Qin emporer) conscripted hundreds of thousands of his subjects to construct his eventual tomb. It seemed that he came up with the idea of having thousands of pottery soldiers guarding him in the afterlife. It was fairly impressive, although we did see the largest of the excavated sights first so the others weren't quite as impressive after this.
Xi-an was really quite humid and grey looking with a kind of permanent mist; there were still lots of Chinese tourists around too. We spent Friday just wandering around trying to recoup some energy and in the evening we boarded another overnight train to Tai'an.
