Farewell Argentina.....
On our last day in Argentina we thought it would be appropriate to sum up our thoughts of the country in general! Here goes...
Cath: We have had an amazing 2 months...the highlights for me have been Patagonia and El Chalten and the incredible treks...most notably our trek to Refugio Frey. It?s been an easy transition into traveller life and hopefully we are all geared up now to take on Bolivia!
Here are a few thoughts from me...
Cool things:
*The scenery is beautiful = really diverse and in many places untouched.
*Family is very important
*Amazing food...steaks, chocolate, ice-cream....
*Incredibly good buses...equivalent to business class on an airoplane!
*People are generally friendly and very proud to be Argentinian!
Wierd things:
*Dogs are everywhere...they roam the streets and are as content as ever!
*There is a national obsession with dulce de leche (caramel topping)...it comes on everything and in everything.
*You cannot get peanut butter anywhere but peanuts abound....go figure!
*Men kiss each other! Matt?s made a few narrow escapes!
Matt - well here I am last day in Argentina and the spell check is saying that every single word I have typed is wrong in pleasing red squiggles! Argentina is a hugely geographically diverse place from the southern ice fields (holding massive freshwater reserves significant on a global scale) of El Chalten to the dessert like landscapes of Cafayate in the north. The one common theme being the Andes running the length of the country some 6000kms.
The People
Friendly
Dogs think they are people and generally seem to be living the vida dulce (sweet life).
Fiercely national with little time for Chileans and Bolivians
Knowledgable of all things historical, economical and political of specifically - yes Argentina
Care for their national parks
A fair number are very regional based especially in the north and have not seen much of the south
All the time in the world
Family, family, family
Decent minimum standard of living - did not notice any desperately poor starving people
The Food
Dulce de leche (like caramel)
Bife de lomo
Italian pastas and pizzas
Bife de lomo
A few vegetables
Dulce de leche
The Music
80´s reigns!
Local music is quite traditional
Annoyances - time is not everything... beaurocracy (sp?).. not too many, very easy place to travel in...
Places been to - BA, Bahia Blanca, Puerto Madryn, El Calafate, El Chalten, Trevelin, El Bolson, Bariloche, Mendoza, Salta, Cachi, Cafayate, Tilcara.
Costs - easy GBP20 each a day.
