Mary's Travels
Linda and I woke up early today to catch a city tour, first getting a very filling breakfast. We met up with our guide Mohammed and headed out for the city. We started at the palace, then walked over to the mausoleum of one of the royal families (we think- the guide was very difficult to understand). Then we walked through a maze of souks... Wow I don't know how we made it out alive haha this guy really knew his stuff. We got to see women weaving carpets, along with many traditional carpets haha. We also got to see a spice house as well as a jewelry store where I got to try on some traditional pieces. Afterwards we took a rest at the hostel for a while- it was hot and we had been walking for hours all covered up. After chilling for a bit, we decided to go out again. We first took out money (finally haha) and went to lunch. We stopped along the way at several excursion shops to find a place to go to the desert tomorrow. Shopping was also included along the way ;) We ate lunch among the shops, getting traditional food- a chicken tager and some chicken couscous. It was good, especially for the three euros we paid for it. After shopping some more, we came back home, exhausted. Shopping is something else here haha. It's exhausting. We came back and decided about desert tours, then headed back out again to tell the company and then go to dinner. Dinner was good, I had another traditional dish (can't remember the name). It was a chicken pillow pastry thing haha with powdered sugar and cinnamon on top... Very interesting. Good, but I think I was still full from lunch and had enough culture shock for one day haha. On our way back we shopped a bit more, finally finding some deals we had been looking for. We got back to the hostel and chilled and got ready for our trip to the desert :) I'm glad we're only spending one day in the city- it's exhausting and overwhelming. I'm sure if we spent more time here we could take things slow and get more accustomed to things, but unfortunately we don't have that luxury. I'm so so glad we're here though, it's been really cool and outside our comfort zones (but inside our safety zones). Plus, everyone speaks French here, way more than I thought. So that's really cool, it's definitely right up there with Arabic, at least in Marrakech.
