Mary's Travels
I got up after my two hour sleep... Well nap I guess... And got my things together and in the car for the airport. I had to say goodbye to Jean at the house, and I tried my best to not cry. We left, and it felt like we were escaping since it was pitch black and silent outside. We went to pick up Vanessa at 5:30 and unfortunately her family couldn't come to the airport so she had to say goodbye right there. She was bawling and I was scared for what'd I'd face at the airport. It was a quiet car ride since Claire was the only one who got more than two hours of sleep, but it didn't seem long. We got to the airport and checked our bags... There was a mistake with Vanessa's, but we got it worked out in no time. Anne had Sarah's boarding pass so she waited for her family while us kids went to go get something to eat. When we were fed, we met up with Sarah and family. We chatted for a bit, and then Anne said "ok well you just go through there and you're off." I was not expecting it to come up so quickly- shouldn't we have to go through winding hallways and up/down a few flights of stairs?? No, we were hanging out right by the gate. Cool. I hugged Anne first, and didn't succeed in keeping my eyes dry. She said "you come back now, ya hear?" She's definitely from the South, and made for a homey invitation I won't be able to turn down :) Then I hugged Laure, who I convinced in the early hours of this morning to come. I'm really gonna miss the only little sister I've ever had. Then I hugged Claire, and I really lost it. Then I hugged Marie and her dad and said my goodbyes. I hugged Anne and Claire one last time, then we went off crying. Sarah started to cry when we were walking through and she looked back and saw Marie crying. We got through the gate and tried to wave goodbye one last time, but we were too far away. So we moved on to the gate and got on the plane, after getting one last pain au chocolat. We boarded and did a little musical chairs and managed to get a widow seat. Since I was already crying, I decided to being the flight by watching Les Miserables. Sarah was shocked to see me bawling at the end... I thought it would be no surprise. I needed some comfort, so I cuddled with Sarah for a few hours and I felt better. After Sarah's back broke, we sat up and listened to music and sang to each other. That made me feel a lot better too. Then we ate our lunch- I had the last chicken salad so Sarah had to have the pasta that she ended up liking. Then we talked for a while and watched some TV until our snack meal. We had three cheese calzones which were actually delicious and ice cream after. We landed about two hours later and waited in long lines for customs. We walked all over the airport to print boarding passes and get to our gate, but we made it in time to stop at the nearby Burger King. The flight from Minneapolis to Kansas City felt like it went by in the blink of an eye... Sarah and I listened I music and got drinks and pretzels and were at KCI. So fast. Only an hour and a half. We walked out of the gate and found our friend Kamryn waiting for us with a sign to welcome us home :) Our parents weren't even there! But I'll cut them some slack, the flight was very early. We rounded up our stuff and parted ways one last time. A very bittersweet day. My host family could not have been better and I could never express to them how truly grateful I am for all that they did for me. Merci beaucoup et au revoir!
