A long drive at around 25mph as we dodged potholes, oncoming lorries and mopeds. We wound up into the mountains with a spectacular view of Hoi An bay, a deep water port used by the US Navy, and Lang Co beach. At the narrow Hai Van pass we stopped for strong coffee and were assailed again by the street vendors. The pass was used by the French before the US Army, and pill boxes and bunkers of the hillsides can be explored, either side of the narrow road and opposite a hairpin bend. A new tunnel through the mountains was completed in 2009, so now lorries take the tunnel and the Hai Van Pass is left to scooters, mopeds and tourists. The Top Gear team passed this way on their mopeds with stone statues and wooden ships strapped to the back.
Hue was incredibly humid, but we went to the Imperial Forbidden Purple City in Hue late in the day to escape the heat. Hue was the capital of Vietnam until the early 20th century and generations of royalty lived in the Forbidden Purple City inside the walls of the Citadel until the last emperor, a puppet of the French, was deposed and exiled to Paris.
Today was the last day of the Hue Dance Festival, and stages were being dismantled as we went round. Dancing in this heat would be hard!
We skipped the scheduled market visit in favour of a swim at the hotel. Upgraded to a suite, we were very grand. Dinner on the rooftop gave us a good view of the closing ceremony of the Festival taking place on the opposite river bank and a small firework display. We passed a man on a moped with a fully grown pig trussed up on a basket on the back, one of the most unusual things we've seen.
