The Conisbee weather jinx caught up with us today, and it rained in time for our cycle ride around the city wall. The city wall is 14 Km long, a perfect rectangle with 68 watch towers and 4 original gates. It has a couple of extra gates since the 1950s and has been rebuilt as often as Trigger's broom.
Outside the city wall are many tall apartment blocks, but inside there are no buildings higher than 3 storeys. Again, most are not older than 40 years as they have been rebuilt in the ancient style.
We then went to the Large Wild Goose Pagoda, the site of a Buddhist temple founded 1,300 years ago. The grounds have beautiful gardens, and the flowering cherries were a picture. The pagoda has also been rebuilt several times, the books in the library were burnt during the cultural Revolution so it has just replica covers and many of the Buddhist artefacts are plastic replicas.
Lunch featured something to do with chicken that was crunchy and gristly. It may have been chicken feet, which are a delicacy here, we probably offended the staff by leaving them. Then we spent a couple of hours wandering around the market.
