Day 84. Mexico.
We decided to head out of town today to see the pyramids at Teotihuacan. We did this as an organised tour, although there were only four in our group. The journey there took about two hours by local bus and coach. The Pyramid of the Sun and the Pyramid of the Moon were originally built around 200AD, but were substantially rebuilt about 100 years ago. The steps up to the top of the pyramids were very steep and climbing at an altitude of 2000m is hard work, however, it was a good, windy view from the top (65m).
We then went into the local town to try the local produce that was made from cactus (fresh cactus fruit, dried cactus fruit, cactus juice, cactus jam, and various alcoholic drinks made from cactus). We also learnt about the agave plant used to make tequila, mezcal, and pulque; and visited a workshop where they make sculptures and art pieces from obsidian (a black glass volcanic rock). Finally we headed to a nearby house for a home cooked meal of steamed chicken with rice and cacti. A good day full of great experiences in a very interesting place ... with lots of cacti to eat and drink!
