Liz has been winging a bit about the cockroaches here. She has a point, every night we have a roach hunt, we dont bother much about the small ones, its the inchers we are after and there is normally more than one of them.
The point is we needed to finish off - get the tick in the box before moving on. The tick in the box took the form of seeing Chemuk Campney, reputed to be the most beautiful place in Guatemala.
To see it we had to jump in the back of a pickup and stand for the 10km of very bumpy dirt road. The journey took us through very beautiful, steep forested mountains. The clincher for me was seeing the traditional way of life in the couple of villages we drove past.
The things to do here are caving, walking up to a view point and swimming in the limestone pools. This reminds me of Vanuatu, Liz did the Millenium Cave there, where she combatted bats, leeches and all things nasty. Basically she did not want to do the caves and I saw a chance to save money. The viewpoint was first, though the pools looked tempting when we walked past.
I was sweating like a pig going up. The humid conditions resulted in a drop of sweat dropping to earth for every step I did. The viewpoint was nice it showed the 300 meter limestone bridge formed by the river cutting under it. Not all the river goes under the bridge, some finds it's way onto the bridge. This feeds exquisite turquoise pools and keeps the few gringos swimming in it happy.
So after seeing the view with no one around we went down and had a closer look at the point where a powerful river simply goes under ground. This is somewhere I did not want to accidently fall into.
The beautiful pools and the little waterfalls between them were special and again very similar to Vanuatu. The water was lovely and full of fish that would come up and suck you if you stayed still. Liz however had a different view point about the fish and consequently did not stay in long. Sliding down falls with the others that had just come back from caving kept us happy until we got the pickup back.
The neighbour has just came out after I heard a little squeal - apparently they have cockroaches. I think Liz has put up enough we are going tomorrow.
