Day 3 we left Thargomindah in Qld for the drive into South Australia. 3 states in 3 days! The drive across was really boring. The roads were dead straight and the landscape very barren with the occasional pretty patch. We passed a few oil and gas plants and a QLD police officer with a radar gun in the only 60 zone for the last 400 km :(((
We set up camp on the Cunnyamulla waterhole about 15km east of Innaminca. The waterhole is about the size of Nepean River from the Penrith weir to Glenbrook National Park. It's huge and feeds off the rains that come down from QLD. The camping is quite nice and we have a great spot all to ourselves under a huge ghost gum tree. We even have a brand new pit toilet to ourselves. We might stay here a few days.
Day 4
We had a rest around camp today put the yabbie net in haven't checked it yet. We're heading into Innamincka for a shower and a pub dinner this afternoon and hope to catch a bit of the Panthers game. Hope to have some Telstra service there so we can post this.
No service sorry. Looks like this blog will get posted from Alice Springs?
Anyway, we have come into Innamincka for a meal, it's roast night and apple crumble. Had our $2 hot showers and we have just worked out over a couple of beers that I had underestimated our fuel needs from here up to the start of the desert so we need an extra 60 litres of fuel. So the plan in the morning is to pack up camp and come back into Innamincka buy another 3 jerry cans of diesel and head off. Not many petrol stations out here.
Day 5. $424 ( 2.09 per litre) in diesel and we heading out of Innamincka via Walkers Crossing on our way to the start of the Simpson Desert. The road up was a mix of sand and gravel and the average speed was about 60kph. The landscape changed from barren bush to moon like desert. We stopped for a road side lunch under a tree and ended up eating in the car as the flies were too bad. Got up to the Birdsville track and made a quick call home on the sat phone to ask Mum and Dad to check the internet and tell us what's in Birdsville. With enough information we decided to give Birdsville a go and come back to the start of the Simpson via the Rid Road in a couple of days.
We arrived at the Birdsville caravan park about 4.30pm and there is hundreds of people here. There is a music festival on Big Red in a couple of days and people have come from all around the country. The park has all the normal amenities that you would normally find but doesn't have a spec of grass. Lol it's all dirt and rocks! We're all sitting around a nice warm fire after dinner deciding what to do tomorrow.
