ABSOLUTELY AWSOME!!! We arrived in Koh Pha Ngan a couple of days before the half moon party and we were admittedly, underwhelmed by what we found there. The weather was pants the whole time we were there so that didnt help. We hired a bike and explored the northern coast, which would have been great without the blizzard trying to blow us off the bike!
We stayed at a little beach bungalow village called My Phangan, which was advertised to have a really good backpacker atmosphere, friendly family of staff blah blah blah. Yeah, it was in a good location to get to the half moon and it was on a beautiful white sand beach, but it was conpletely empty and the staff were like walking zombies who we discovered were entering our room when we were out - how rude!! Needless to say, we cancelled our few days after the party to get off the island asap.
The thing that made it all worth it was the most awsome rave ever - The Half Moon Party. Unlike the beach parties of the Full and Black moon's the half moon party is held in the jungle, which makes it extra special. We didnt want to pay for a taxi so we grabbed a beer and started to walk. We were then picked up by a jolly local on a moped who offered us a free lift if we could cram on the back, so we did! (turned out he was a drug dealer heading there himself - but thats not the point!)
We had been facebooking the irish girls from the trekking in chiang mai and arranged to meet up with them. They were pretty merry by the time they got there but it just made it even more funny! We had a wicked night :) on entry, you're greeted by local artists who paint on you with UV paint. After a lot of cheeky haggling, em got a butterfly on her shoulder and wangled free reign of the paintbrushes on her leg whilst mark was getting his skelton hand done.
We werent partying for long before the rains came in bucket loads! But whilst 70% of the people ran for shelter, we were out revelling in the mud with our bucket cocktails doing the limbo!
We left at 6am, bumming a free lift with the girls and jumping out on the move when the driver didnt go the way we anticipated. Managed to sleep for about 2 hours b4 getting the most choppy boat ride over to Koh Samui. Needless to say, all we did was sleep when we got there...
Totally worth it! ;-D
