Mark & Em's Travels
Hello people!
We have blogged in ages, the internet connections over here are sooo frustrating!! hence, only one or two images being randomly uploaded!
We left Bangkok for Siem Reap - Cambodia on Saturday morning which took about 6 hours to get to the border where we were repeatedly ripped off by various border authorities and randoms! Eventually we made it through the border and headed to Siem reap which was a further 5 hours in a dodgy Taxi. We shared it with a nice Canadian couple we met on the bus (Will and Vicky) We rolled up to a hostel that evening and made the most of the happy hour!
Fist day - 4.30AM start. We went to Angkor Wat for the sun rise, this is where Tomb raider was filmed. This place is 700 years old, it looks amazing, the way it was built with rocks and the whole architecture design, check out the pics to see it for real!
We went to the 'tomb raider' tree where these massive trees called 'Spung trees'' have grown through the rocks. We think they were meant to be called Sponge trees from their description, we didn't want to tell them that they have been spelling it wrong for the few hundred centuries!
Over all the day was pretty impressive, saw some monkeys too, it rained on and off as well! which was nice! our trusty primark rain-macs came into use!
That night we hit the town with the other two. The Malaria drugs were kicking in and so were their symptoms, mixing them with lots of boooz was not the best formula, for that reason, day ones write up ends here!
Day two, we went to the floating village, where the entire village literally floats! the houses are built onto bamboo and float! they have schools, churches shops and everything else a village has! we took a trip on the boat up the river and ended up in a restaurant. mark decided he wanted to catch a cat fish and feed it to the gators, so for 10$ he did that! Thinking he was just going to drop with fish in the gator pit was wrong! it was alive, and tied to a length of rope on a bamboo shoot and lowered into the gator pit slowly to tease them. then one by one they would jump up and snap and Mark would wrestle with them, like tug of war, at one point a gator was hanging fully off the end of this rope and death rolling! On the boat trip back we bought books and pens for the local schools and stopped off to hand them out. Arriving at the school there were no students, only a local man with a dodgy sounding texas /american accent. We gave him the books and pens. We cant help but think that they give them straight back to the shop, for the next gullible tourists to buy, thinking they are helping out the community and poor kids! But hey, the whole trip to Cambodia so far has made us feel that everyone is trying to con us or rip us off, its just the way it is!
Phnom Penh -
Bus trip down to Phnom Penh, the royal capital. another 5 hours sat on a bus! After looking around several dodgy hostels on arrival we ended up staying in a hotel, which was crap too!
Day One,
We visited the killing fields where the Khmer Rouge brutally killed a 3rd of Cambodia's population, we visited the museum after, it was an old school in the city but was taken over and converted into the torcher chambers where people were killed, and then buried in the killing fields. This was very powerful, seeing photos taken at the time of corpses and people seconds before their death! The pictures say it all!
Day Two (yesterday)
Didnt do much, we went to the Palace to see the emerald Buddha, again, amazing buildings and gardens that would put a freshly trimmed french poodle to shame! In the evening we moved out of the central hotel, into a cheaper nicer hostel on the outskirts of the city.
Today, we paid $7 to sit by a pool all day in a 5* hotel on the Mekong River, we got very sunburnt and are now dealing with the consequences! :(
Our Vietnam visa is not valid until the 22nd so we are having to kill some time in this city before our 5 hour bus trip down to the border! We wouldnt mind but we are struggling to find inspiration from Phnom Penh, maybe its because we saw all of the main attractions in the first day. Needless to say, we are stilling having muchos fun!
Blog soon! Sorry its a long one and has shocking grammer, written on the rush! ( By Mark)
Hope everyone is well.
Mark & Em xx
P.s Sorry theres no pics, we'd be paying thousands for the internet if we waited for them to upload! :(
