Mark & Den's Travels
Jluy 24th-25th July Hue
Well nobody's more surprised than us we make it to Hue only 5 hr bus trip so didnt need to sleep this time.. The journey took us through some lovely mountain passes.
First impressions of Hue very noisy busy city. I think we are getting little tired of cities but without our own transport it's very hard to get off the touirist route. so we find a comfortable guest house. We are straight out to find tour guide for Vinh Linh Village. Vinh Moc Tunnels. we agree a price with a local Luw Mark is riding his own bike and I will travel with Luw,, Cheapest option
Ok off for early start 08:00 and we are off heading north on HWY1 4.5hrs later we reach the village, very slow hot ride the bikes struggled with the hills, our average speed was 50kph. Very hot dusty, thirsty we take lunch at the village before entering the tunnels.
We have a lovely girl to guide us through. first impressions reminded me of Ypes in Belgium "no birds" all very quiet as we pass through the fields we can see the top level trenches. which they used for surface fire and defence. We head underground to the second level which was the living area for villlage people we are wearing head torches, even I have to stoop in some places so you can imagine how small these tunnels are. Then they open up to little side cave like areas these were homes for each individual families this was their private area to do what families do...
As we proceed through we can see the maternity wing where amazingly enough 17 babies were born..There was one big commonual area where all the families met to communicate socialise and sing during the bombing raids. We eventually exit straight onto the beach. You would never see these exits from the air or sea. amazingly camaflagued in the undergrowth.. The villagers used to send supplies out to nearby island who was first defence for the area.
Riding home gives me lots of time to reflect on the day and how it must have been trying to live there for 3years.
Content to be back into Hue.
25th July We take out the bikes and Luw again to see local sites ie Wats and the old Citadel. We enjoyed Lunch with Luw his wife and family. His wife has cooked us a superb meal and we eat until we cant move. Lovely family and an honour for us to be invited.. On our way back to the city we stop off at Ho Chi Minh Family house which is now kept as a shrine there is even a sign on the river bank where he used to swim. great eh!!
Tonight we are off on the overnight train to Hanoi.
