So on Saturday, still nursing sunburnt legs, we left Aitutaki and came back for our last couple of nights in Raro. Went to Te Vara Nui village cultural tour and over water night show extravaganza complete with fire dancers. Suffice to say that Tony got fed up learning about the 6 stages in the life cycle of a coconut, didn't pay much attention to how to carve your own log drum, and only memorised selected parts of the polynesian legends. We had a fabulous 'Island style" buffet and then the dancing began. Whilst everyone else was mesmerised by the young dancers in their grass skirts and coconut shell bikini tops, Tony was excited because he'd spotted an eel thrashing about in the water - I was worried it would knock the dancers out of their canoes!
On Sunday we woke up to the sound of torrential rain and cloudy skies, so while Tony went off for a run, I stayed in the room and enjoyed my bowl of ''Sanitarium" muesli - yes it really is called that. Went to mass at a tiny island church, and was literally moved to tears by the wonderful singing in the polynesian maori language. It was very uplifting. Spent the day poodling round the island on a scooter, swimming and snorkelling and packing up ready for New Zealand.
Finally sat under a coconut tree drinking a piña colada and watching the sunset! Our last night in Rarotonga .....
