We left Penang last Saturday and took a 5 hour train ride to Hat Yai in Thailand. We spent the night there before leaving for Krabi the next day. We experienced our first tuk tuk ride to the bus station. We then took a 5 hour scary bus ride to Krabi where we listened to Thai music all the way. You have not experienced bad driving until you have come to Thailand thats all we can say!!
We spent 2 nights in Krabi Town but as there isnt a beach near the town there wasnt a lot for us to do. We got manicures and pedicures done as they are really cheap here. We also got to try Thai Green Curry and local fruits while in Krabi.
We then went to Ko Lanta which took about 4 hours to get to. We asked to be dropped off at a guesthouse from our lonely planet guide. The only thing the guide forgot to mention was that most things are shut in Ko Lanta in low season. After unsuccessfully struggling along the beach with our heavy rucksacks and having no such luck at finding anywhere to stay, we ended up in a hotel for the night. As there wasnt anything to do there as it was low season, we decided to move on the next day. All the restaurants and bars were shut and there was no one on the beach!
On Wednesday we got the bus and then a boat to Ko Phi Phi. When we got off we were hassled with people offering accommodation. We ended up spending the night in a guesthouse but wasnt happy there so moved to a bungalow the next day. We spent 5 days in Phi Phi and liked it there. We spent most the time on the beach and also done a boat trip. We went to see Maya Bay (where The Beach was filmed) which we had to swim to. We also visited Monkey Bay where we got to feed wild monkeys. The small ones were cute but the big ones quite aggressive. We done a lot of swimming and snorkelling that day and the weather was really good for it.
Also while in Phi Phi we tried our first alcoholic buckets which were very strong. We ended up watching Thai boxing that night which just looked painful. Phi Phi had nice bars and restaurants and although it was touristy it wasnt OTT.
We left Phi Phi on Monday and got the boat to Phuket. We are staying in Patong which is a beach resort here. You can buy anything while laying on the beach from food and drink to dresses and ornaments. It is very built up here and very in your face. Of a night time the strip is alive with bars. There are a lot of lady boys about, some are obvious and others you really wouldnt know. Quite scary really. Some dress up in drag and stand in the street to have photos done with people. We also couldnt get over the amount of European men with young Thai girls. Its a mans paradise over here.
Tomorrow we leave for Ko Samui. We're enjoying Thailand and loving the prices.
