Since our last update, we've been island hopping. We started in Ko Samui the biggest of the 3 islands. We stayed at the beach resort of Lamai. We managed to find ourselves a cheap little bungalow and they even put a TV in for us. We ended up 5 days there and basically spent all our time on the beach. The weather was lovely and we had a good few days there. Of an evening there was plenty of bars and restaurants but it wasnt OTT like Phuket.
After this, we went to our second island of Ko Phangan. We stayed at Thong Pan Noi which was a really quiet little resort. They had a few shops which were huts and it hasnt been taken over by tourism. There wasnt even really roads, they more like dirt tracks and it was a very bumpy ride getting over there. The taxi's were pick up trucks where you had to balance yourself and hold onto your luggage at the same time. We had 4 days there and once again spent most of it on the beach. This is also the island that hosts the full moon party but unfortunately it is at the end of the month. We also managed to miss all the others (there seems to be one every week - half moon etc).
We left Ko Phangan on Saturday and got a boat to Ko Tao. We were about 10 minutes away from docking when the engine went quiet and the boat tilted to one side. We were convinced it was about to capsize and panicked. Even the Thai people on the boat ran from the bottom up onto deck. Even all the water came out of the toilets and luggage and everything shifted to one side of the boat. It was very scary. There was black smoke everywhere but after about 5 minutes, the journey carried on like normal. It wasnt a little boat either, it was a ferry.
When we arrived we caught another 'taxi' to Sairee Beach where we spent a long time looking for accommodation. We ended up spending the night in a hotel as everywhere was full and then moved to a bungalow the next day. Yesterday we went on a snorkelling trip around the island. We tired ourselves out with all the swimming we done. We even saw a black tip reef shark while snorkelling which was quite cool. The rest of the time we have spent on the beach here chilling a bit before heading for the hussle and bussle of Bangkok.
We have got a long day ahead of us tomorrow as we have to get a boat and then a bus - altogether it will take about 11 hours. We have also paid a little extra to go on the bigger safer boat before everyone panics. We're spending a few days in Bangkok then heading to Chang Mai for a few days.
