We got the bus up from Singapore on Thursday and reached Kuala Lumpar after a six hour bus ride. We were greeted off the bus by a swarm of taxi drivers all wanting to give us a ride. As we didnt have a clue where we was, we jumped in one. We were later to learn that we were only 3 minutes from our hostel and he'd simply drove around the block a few times. He also overcharged us, it was only 4 pounds but we were later to learn it should of cost under a pound. That was the last time we got a taxi in KL!!
That evening we had a wander around the markets in China Town and were cornered every 2 minutes by the stall owners to either buy handbags, watches, belts or purses. It did become annoying. Ofcourse everyone could offer us the best price!! Now we are in Asia we have now switched over to double rooms as we were paying 3.50 each per night for an air con room.
On Friday we headed over in the sweltering heat to the KL tower for view of the city. We would have caught local transport but we couldnt figure out how to use it. So our feet had to suffice. We then went and had a look around 'Golden Triangle' shopping block and brought our first pair of new shoes (well they were a bargain - 4 and 9 pounds). You should have been proud of us, we could have brought the whole shop. That evening, we decided to eat in the hussle and bussle of China Town. The tables are lined up in the street and we had a car pass us while we were eating. It was only a couple of inches away and we had to hold on to our table!! It was an experience.
On Saturday we were up at the crack of dawn to head down to the Petronas Twin Towers to get our free tickets. They are distributed on a first come first served basis and theres only 1000. The kiosk opens at 8.30am and we got there then and there was already a massive queue. After queuing for 1.30hrs, we finally managed to get our tickets. We then had a couple of hours to kill before our 1.30pm slot so we just wandered around. At 1.30pm, we went back and got to go onto the suspension bridge which connects the two towers on the 41st floor. At present, they are the tallest twin towers in the world. After this, we went to Times Square shopping centre which has 12 floors and also houses an indoor theme park complete with a roller coaster. It makes bluewater look tiny.
On Sunday we wandered up to look at Merdeka Square where Malaysia gained independence in 1957. We also saw lots of temples on the way including Sultan Abdul Samad. As we finished all our sight seeing for the day, we relaxed in the TV lounge watching movies which was quite a good idea as there was torrential downpours in the afternoon.
On Monday we got up and headed to the bus station to get a bus to Cameron Highlands. It was a 4 hour bus ride which cost about 2.50. We had to have our backpacks on the seats next to us because for some reason they couldnt be put underneath. The greeting when we got off the bus this time was a little nicer with people offering us accommodation. We saw a leaflet of a place in our guide book and decided to stay there. Once again, cheap accommodation - under 3 pound. Last night, we went and tried an Indian Restaurant. We had our food served on a banana leaf and they cook the naans in a clay pot oven in the street. It was delicious and there was loads there. Its the most full we've ever been on 1.50!!
Today, we went on a countryside tour. First stop was at a Chinese Temple which was amazing and full of massive gold statues. Second stop was at a rose garden. The third stop was at the Strawberry Farm where we got to try dried strawberrys and fresh strawberry jam. Very yummy. We also had a fresh strawberry milkshake which when made with the real stuff is so much nicer. Forth stop was the BOH Tea Plantation where we got a factory tour and got to see the tea leaf paddies. There are hectares of the things. Some of them are on really steep slopes. Glad we havent got to clamber up there to pick them. After this we stopped at a butterfly farm and a bee farm. It was strange coming from KL to here.
The weather is a lot cooler as we are so high up. Tomorrow we move onto Penang - our last stop in Malaysia (we think).
