Today we had a private 4 WD tour to the interior of Fiji. We were taken along some of the roughest roads I've ever encountered, in fairness they were more like tracks than roads. We went up to 2,000 feet above sea level to see some breath taking views out to the surrounding islands. Our Guide, Ronnie, was very interesting he stopped along the way for photos and to pick Guava fruit from a tree for us to eat.
Then we went to the Nausori highlands village a remote village with no running water, electricity or gas. We were welcomed with a traditional Kava ceremony with our guide acting as spokesman to introduce us to the village. We were then taken around the village by Luisa and 3 of her 6 grandchildren. There were piglets, goats, chickens and cows all around so Adam was very happy.
After lemon tea and some fried tarrow which I'm pleased to say I had a small piece we headed off.
Our return journey took us through Nadi where we were fortunate enough to see the parade of floats for the festival.
It's amazing to see the sugar train track just along the side of the road with no barriers to protect people. The train passes the cane fields and drops off empty wagons in the morning then comes back for full ones in the afternoon. The average wage for manually cutting and collecting the sugar cane is £6 per day.
