G'Day
We boarded the Indian Pacific train at 6.40pm on Thursday night for our 2500km train journey to Perth. We chose a sleeper cabin and although it was very compact it was much better than a seat to sleep in. You got a little Indian Pacific toiletry bag full of goodies and the beds were comfy. After a good nights sleep we had the full day to look out of the window and enjoy the views.
We got to de-train in the town of Cook (population 7) while the train took on water. It was a strange little place with nothing going on and right in the middle of nowhere on the Nullarbor Plain.
Once on the train it was then a long slog across the Nullarbor Plain, Nullarbor means 'no trees' in latin!!
And guess what there really aren't any the landscape is dry and dusty with the odd kangaroo bouncing around. We did see a dead camel, a dead horse and a dead kangaroo not sure if they had died of natural causes or lack of water.
We pulled into Kalgoorlie at 8pm on the Friday evening and had a tour of the mining town. All its old original buildings have been kept intact and are really beautiful with a wild west look to them. The big tourist draw here is the giant Superpit that they have for mining the gold. It is 4.2km long, 1.2km wide and 460 metres deep and it runs 24/7 it is so big the trucks look tiny but are indeed huge.
Another big draw here for many are the Skimpys or naked bar girls that work the bars as our tour bus passed one bar a group of men and women came out and flashed at us which was quite funny to see!!!!!
Kalgoorlie is still a town known for its red light area as well so you could say it is the Soho of Australia.
After another night on the train we pulled into East Perth at 9am on Saturday morning and took the short train journey to the city of Perth.
So here we are our 6th and final state on this leg of the trip. Western Australia is bigger than Texas and looks like it has a lot to offer, so we are going exploring for a few hours.
We have added a few pictures so check them out.
Lots of Love
M & M
