Selamat Detang
We ended up walking around last night trying to find an ATM so we could withdraw some money out in the process I was cracked right between the eyes by a market stall holders canopy that was keeping out the rain it was a 10 ft metal pole and it bashed straight into my head. Luckily the only thing that I suffered was a headache for several hours!!!!
Eventually after a bit more walking we found a bank and then were able to eat!!!
Today has been another day for the buses we are getting quite used to using them and they are really cheap. We took ourselves off out of the town with no pavements and headed for the hills, Penang Hill to be precise. At 830m above sea level it is the highest summit in Penang. To reach the summit you can take the 3 hour walk or the 30 minute funicular railway ride to the top. I bet you can guess which way we went!!!
The funicular railway has been in operation since 1922 and runs at about 45 degrees up the hill. From the top there are good views of Penang as well as a big mosque and temple to look at.
There are also lots of people selling things form lunch to souvenirs including grasshoppers made from reeds which were really cool but too delicate to carry around so I had to pass.
Whilst at the top we saw a sign for a Canopy Walk and thought it could be interesting so we followed the signs and 2kms later reached the point where the walk starts!!!
We took a look at it and saw it was only RM5/75p and decided to walk the 230m rope bridge around the trees the highest point was 100ft from the ground!!!
Once on the rope bridge we questioned our sanity as Malaysia is a country not known for health and safety and the walk had been shut up until July for repairs but there was no going back. Luckily there was just us 2 on it but it was still creaking and swaying around. We reached the 1st platform quickly and decided that we were both mental but kept going anyway. The second section was a much longer run and we both kept looking at the knots in the ropes and praying that they were really tight!!!
One thing that did worry me was the wood seemed to be nailed to the tree that was holding the ropes but we were over half way by this point. We started the 3rd section and it was a little steeper and I asked Mel if she wanted to go first this is when she opted to tell me that she had let me go first to test the bridge because if it held me it would hold her!!!!
Half way along the 3rd section a gecko jumped out on me and scared the pants off me it caused the bridge to swing a bit I can tell you!!!!! We were both glad to get to the other side and back on solid ground it was an experience and the views were good but the fear outweighed any fun that we should have had up there.
As it was Sunday the Hill was crammed with locals and when we boarded the train back down there are 20 seats for sitting on but there must have been 70 people crammed into the train which made for a fun ride down to the halfway point. Then everyone stampedes out of that car runs around a bridge to board the other car that takes you to the bottom.
Before we knew it we were back in Georgetown and ready for dinner which we had at a local cafe.Tomorrow is the snake temple so stay tuned for more exciting tales!!!!
Lots of Love
