We arrived back in Lima and decided to head to Miraflores to find a hotel, a suburb of Lima, a little out of the centre and decidely nicer and safer! We enjoyed having a wonder around the parks where the artisans display their work and drinking coffee in the cafes which has been really relaxing after a hectic couple of weeks. We even went to the cinema to see Failure to Launch, which we enjoyed - it was nice to hear some English and to perv over Matthew McConnaughey!!
We then went into central Lima to do a little sight seeing, starting on a light note, with the Spanish Inquistion Museum! The museum is set in the University Library and was used between 1570 and 1820. Prisoners were kept in the basement, where they were tortured! You can walk through the tunnels in the basement where wax works display the prisoners and torturers! It was actually quite eery in the basement, very dark with lots of wax works lurking around corners! The information was in Spanish, so we just looked the pictures!
We then visited the San Francisco Church where we joined a guided tour. Beneath the church are catacombs (underground tunnels) where it is estimated around 70,000 people were buried, in order to be closer to God. Both the rich and the poor were buried here, and you can still see the bones! The church library has over 25,000 books, some dating back to the conquistadors. The church also has a monastary that still house around 100 monks!
We then visited Polvos Azules, which is also known as the Black Market, as pretty much all of it is stolen or smuggled, which the government ignores! It has everything from tv's, sunglasses and perfume, to watches, phones and cameras. Then we headed back to Miraflores for a lazy afternoon before our early morning flight.
