Well we arrived in Delhi and after checking into our Hotel (Broadway) we had a walk round, heading to the Red Fort (we obviously got lost!!) and ended up in HELL!! Well that was our first impressions anyway (they haven't changed much!!). The Old city was extremely dirty and smelly and the people were quite hostile! We didn't feel at all welcome and so opted for a Rickshaw on the way back!! We decided to eat at the hotel (which is home to the famous Chor Bizzarre restaurant) as we were advised not to go out in this area at night (like we were planning to!!??). The restaurant cheered us up a little; really quirky with a vintage car as the salad bar and a 4 poster bed as one of the tables! And they served a mean G&T (much needed!).
The next day we heaed back to the Red Fort for a look around. The fort was built in 1638 for a Mughal Emperor. We entered through the Lahore Gate, which got it's name as it faces Lahore in Pakistan, and into the vaulted arcade Chatta Chowk which used to sell to the royal house, but has now gone downmarket and sells to tourists! We had a look around the War Museum which was basically a collection of gruesome swords! The photos show the rest of the Red Fort (we won't bore you with the details - we can see you dropping off!)
We then headed to Connaught Place to book a train ticket - and booked a 7 day chauffered trip instead! Yes, we were as surprised as you! We got our previously bought trains tickets refunded and opted for a driver to take us around Delhi, Jaipur and Agra and the price included everything up until the driver dropped us off at the airport on the 10th! We thought it would be a safer and more interesting way to do the cities this, after a pretty naff time in Delhi - so we feel much happier about our next week. After we'd decided to go ahead, the driver whisked us away for some sightseeing. We saw some temples, tombs and India Gate (see photos).
