A trip today to the Postojna cave complex about 45 minutes from Ljubljana. Stalactites, stalagmites, columns and cave curtains. A bit like the Buchan caves only on a much grander scale. To compare these to the caves back home would be like comparing a local parish church to St Paul's cathedral. Firstly it has it's own train which takes you through limestone caves to the main tunnels and caverns. Then a 3klm walk through the main caverns ending up in the big one they call the "concert hall" where they have hosted philharmonic orchestras and operas 150m below ground, there is space for 10,000 people in there. The caves also are home to the cave salamander, a very cool looking walking fish that lives in the river which flows at the bottom of the cave complex. Then a train ride back to the entrance and warmth ( it's a steady 10 degrees in there) and this was only 5 of the 25klm of caves in the system. Without a doubt the most amazing natural wonder I have ever seen, doubt I will ever see better. Unfortunately Tanya had to stay at the hotel, bed bound by a migraine, hopefully the last assault of this ongoing cold/flu. Off to Venice tomorrow.
