So today was our final day in Peru as we left Arequipa for Arica in Chile. The day didn't start the greatest as, just as we were leaving the hostel, Beth realise that she had locked the keys for the locks on our bags in her big rucksack. After a short, heated discussion, we decided to ignore this problem as it wouldn't really matter until we reached Arica. We got to the bus station and booked onto a bus for about £5 each.
The bus journey to the Peruvian town of Tacna took around 6 and a half hours but this could have been quicker if the driver hasn't stopped about a million times to pick people up so that our bus was more than full and people were having to stand by the time we got to Tacna. The driving wasn't the greatest given that the driver kept veering onto the wrong side of the road as if he was checking his phone. Luckily there was no oncoming cars to get in our way!!
When we made it to Tacna, we quickly walked to the international bus station departures and found where we needed to get the bus from to Arica. After getting there, we thought it might be simple but it wasn't!! We watched 4 buses come and go as there were so many people with loads of luggage that they couldn't fit our bags on the bus. Eventually, a larger bus came and we were able to get on. The border crossing itself was pretty straightforward but it was about half 9 by the time we reached Arica as the time in Chile is two hours ahead of Peru. Locating our hostel was a bit tricky as it was down a quiet back street but we found it with the help of some kind locals.
Once we had made it to the hostel, we had the unresolved problem of the locks with the keys locked inside Beth's rucksack. Beth's solution to this was to tear the small rip in her black bag which we use to carry our big rucksacks. Beth claims that she will sew this tomorrow but I'm not so sure given her lack of sewing skills!!
