Richard and I decided to take a long weekend off together before the arrival of baby Bosley. We booked off 6th- 10th July 2017. The night before we have to clear out the bedrooms in advance of new carpet being laid, Rich did the heavy lifting but I had loads of bits in the small room to clear out. We worked from home in the morning and we were having the carpet changed in our bedroom and the nursery. The guys were due at 8 but it ended up being switched to 11.30 so just before we left. We were also awaiting the arrival of the nursery furniture from Mothercare which had an indicated time of 1.30-4.30 (by which the carpet guys would be finished) so I had to ask my neighbour if they could sign for it if we left a key for them! We set off for 12.15 and it was a really hot day. We stopped in Bristol to have some KFC which was about 2.5 hours into the journey. We then continued on and got to our destination for about 5.10 so we had made some good time. We were staying in a lovely farmhouse in the middle of the country called the Degembris. We checked in to our room which was at the back of the house and the bathroom you stepped up into (which in a way was a shame as the front rooms overlooked the beautiful grounds) Once settled we then went for a walk around the grounds and Rich took some pregnancy shots. There was a cute little bridge and lake near the bottom of the hill and we then walked up the hill (which was very steep) to the fields of straw and came back in the backdoor. After a quick shower we headed to a pub in the book which was recommended called the smugglers inn. This was set about 15 mins away and was near a campsite. It was a lovely pub and had massive portions. I had some garlic mushrooms on bread and Rich had moules mariniere. I had scampi, chips and peas for my main and Rich had a burger. It was so big we actually left some behind and that never happens. Afterwards we headed home as we were both a bit tired from our long trip.
On Friday the weather seemed quite pleasant and we headed off towards Newquay. We decided to head for Watergate Bay as people had said how nice it was there. You came down a bit of a hill to get there and it did look gorgeous so we stopped and took a few pictures. We then headed for the carpark and paid for 2 hours to take a wander. It was a relatively small carpark and there was a hotel nearby and Jamie Oliver's 15 restaurant with a little café and surf shop. We walked onto the beach and the tide was really far out and there weren't too many people around. We went to the water edge which was freezing and started walking towards the right and a big cave. Along our path Rich took some lovely pictures of me and bump to capture these special moments. I wanted some pregnancy shots but they were so expensive (£100) plus then newborn shots were £285 for only 5 pictures (like WTF) but I may still do them. We walked over, even Rich did some long jumps and triple jumps along the way. We reached the caves which were unreachable for me (as over lots of rocks plus under cliffs) Rich went in for a little look around and we then walked back closer to the cliffs, there were some cute rock pools on the way and we met lots of dogs. The weather had turned out even nicer so when we got back we thought it would be good to get the beach towels and hang out and enjoy it. Rich went to extend the car park and collect our bits. He added another 3 hours and we perched down for the day. The beach where people sat was quite small as the tide obviously came in quite high which we witnessed through the day. By the time we left the cave we had gone and explored earlier was now submerged. It actually got quite hot so I had my bikini on but belly covered up, it was lovely to relax and bake in the sun for a few hours. Richard did go off for a wander as he gets bored sitting around especially in sand. There was a small path where the water went down to the sea so I went to dip my big swollen feet in. A guy was there with his family so I got chatting to him. They came every year for the last 4 years with their son and loved it. I was saying it was my first time but was beautiful but quite pricey for a UK trip. He paid £800 to stay there for a week. We had paid £320 for a 4 night stay. Our time for almost up so we were debating staying a bit longer as we thought the carpark should be covered. We had spent £6 and that was the cost of the day. When we went upstairs I spotted someone who looked like my old boss/friend Pete Rostron and low behold it was him. He was there with Claire, Maria and Max so we had a chat with them and decided to stay longer. We checked in the hotel and they said parking was covered so we went back down and played on the beach as the kids enjoyed the sea and sand!! We stayed another hour and left not long before 6 but it was a delightful surprise. So nice to see them all as I hadn't seen Pete since the end of March and was unlikely to see him before our baby was born. We headed back to the B&B and got showered up. We were both a bit burnt in the end and so was the rest of Cornwall J
We decided to head for Padstow for a look around. Parking there was £3.70 for 4 hours. Padstow is known for having lots of Rick Stein restaurants but apparently the locals hate him. We stopped at Rick Stein's restaurant a bit further in and a guy said something like 'good luck its normally fully booked'. Once he went in, I realised it seemed a bit of a weird comment, like he didn't think we were good enough to go in there. We then settled on having fish and chips and curry sauce for £17.30 sat down by the port. There were lots of seagulls wanting to run off with it so we had to be vigilant. A poor girl had her ice cream nicked straight away after getting it. After eating we then went to a pub called the Old Custom House. Rich had an ale and I had a blackcurrant juice, hard core stuff! After an hour or so we headed back and were there for 9.15. We watched a million ways to die in the west on TV.
On Saturday, there was a new person in the B&B, an annoying loud girl talking outside our room quite early. We saw her and her friend at lunch and she didn't stop talking, a lot of nonsense as well! I had 2 pancakes and a croissant for breakfast. Rich had smoked salmon but the amount of salmon was a bit stingy J We left at 9.45 to head to Lands End. It took about an hour and was £6 for parking which you could use for a week but obviously how many people do that J We passed on the way the 'First and Last Inn'. There were shops and entertainment inside and a Cornish pasty place. We had a wander around and there is the Isle of Sicily in the distance and some other big rocks with names. We took some pics with the sign and then walked over to where the last café was and sat on a bench for a bit. There was a hiking trail around that side but we didn't do that. We walked back and went around the other way and hiked to the edge to see the coastline. After taking some pictures we wandered back around and went past a little farm they had there. In the field there were 2 llamas and a goat. We didn't pay to go into the little farm, there didn't seem to be much to see. We took a break when we got to the top and sat for a bit enjoying the scenery and after a while then headed for the exit. Rich had seen there was a nice looking beach nearby called Porthcurno which was a 20 mins drive but it started raining as soon as we hit the beach which had no cover which was a shame as it was a beautiful little cove with clear blue waters with a boat docked a bit further out. So we took a few pictures then had to head back to the car. Some people on the beach had their tents so could escape the rain. It was £2 for parking for 2 hours but we gave it to another guy as we were only there half an hour so didn't want it to go to waste.
We then decided to head to St Ives which was about 50 mins away. We got some petrol on the way. It was £2.20 parking for 2 hours. After parking up we headed down into town and stumbled across a little tea shop which was once we were in rated highly on trip advisor so was a good find. We went in and I had a cream tea for £4.95 and Rich had a crab sarnie for 9.95 and pig scratchings. They were really nice. We then walked to the port front and had ice cream, I had a Mr Whippy and Rich had a cookies and caramel ice cream. We then walked further along the port and tried to get a picture of the two of us down by the water with the set timer, one picture came out ok but the other was zoomed in a bit too much. We picked up 3 boxes of fudge for £4.50. We then walked through the cobbled streets and little shops and headed to the beach. There was some cute little houses along the way. We took a quick few pictures and went back to make our car park as it was almost running out. We did see some people on beach who had just got married. We then drove back to the farmhouse to get washed up and ready for dinner. I drove to dinner as it wasn't too far. We went to the Foxes revenge and I had half lobster with chips and bread and Rich had a Rib-eye steak. They were both delicious and I had an apple lattice and custard for dessert and Rich had a cheeseboard. The bill was £59. When we got back we watched bridesmaids.
On Sunday we drove to St Agnes which was about half an hour away and 70p for parking for one hour. St Agnes was yet another centre of the tin and copper mining industries in Cornwall. Many of the old engine houses can be seen around the area. It is still possible to follow the mining trail beginning at the famous Wheal Coates tin mine on the cliffs near Chapel Porth and continuing along the coastal path to the old workings at Polberro and Wheal Kitty. The trail ends at Blue Hills at Trevellas, the last remaining tin production centre in Cornwall. The mine Wheal Coates goes right down to the sea and at high tide the waves can be heard crashing against the rocks through a grate on the floor of the ruin. The mine shaft is accessible through a large cave at low tide on Chapel Porth Beach which is said to be haunted. We didn't do that walk but we walked up a big hill to look out over the beach to the left of it (if you looked down). It was another surf beach and it was very rocky. We walked a bit further along and climbed up so we had a good view of the beach and surrounding areas. After taking a few pictures we headed down onto the beach for a walk around. It wasn't a particularly nice day weather wise so there wasn't loads of people around but still a few were giving their sunbathing a go. We then sat for a bit to relax before heading to the car. We then drove to see the old buildings up closer. It was a very tight road so were thankful we didn't bump into anyone there. The car park down the bottom was actually closed so I just took pictures through the window. We then headed off and drove via Perranporth, we ended up parking on the big hill overlooking the massive beach. There was a big sun dial and part of the cliff had broken away. We had some ice creams for £3.70 (I had a mint and I think Rich had a salted caramel) and went to sit on a bench overlooking the beach. It really was a big old beach and the tide was really far out so we didn't walk onto it. The weather still wasn't great but when the sun came out it was nice. A woman who had been behind us in the queue dropped her ice cream and her dog went to go and eat it. She grabbed him and then went to pick it up even though it had fallen on the filthy ground, she asked Rich to get her a wet wipe from her pack (which didn't look particularly clean anyway) and then wiped off the dirty ice cream and ate the rest.. It was pretty gross! We then went for a little wander into the shops to look for a magnet and I picked up a magnet for £2. We then decided to head back to the B&B to have a little rest! We then went to the Plume of feather for dinner which wasn't too far, I had squid to start and a burger for my main. Rich had squid as well and fish and chips for his main. It was £44.30 and left £4 tip. We then went home and watched dawn of the planet of the apes.
On Monday we had breakfast at 9 and we both had a full English. Left at 9.45 and did a drive by in Bristol to see Richard's old home and haunts, these included Asda where he worked, Mc D's where Andrew worked, a BMX track and some woods where a fire him and his friends set got out of control. He even pointed out an old girlfriend's house. We carried on and stopped at service station around 12.50 and Rich got a M & S sarnie (I wasn't hungry) and we got home for 2.45 so was a pretty quick trip. Once we got home we had to hoover and clean house as it needed doing post the carpets being sorted. For dinner we had a Chinese take away which was lovely and there was loads so very filling.
