Arrived at Flores, a small quaint pretty island-town, just in time to relax with a bottle of wine on the balcony of the hotel and watch the sunset. Again, the hotel has exceeded my expectation as is set overlooking a magnificant lake, with a pool and great bar and restuarant. So after a long day of travelling we enjoyed a great meal and relaxed with a few drinks then headed to bed early as we had an early start tomorrow.
Our day started at 5.45 am, yes 5.45 am, crawled out of bed and made it just in time to leave for a day at the ancient Mayan ruin site of Tikal. Tikal is one of the largest sites discovered and the ruins are set in the dense jungle, all placed strategically inline with the astronomical alignment and design in such a way that they could track the changing seasons and indicate what time of the year and day it was. These structures were built as places of worship to the gods and sacrifices were performed as offerings to these gods. Its an aweinspiring site and a definate must see as being a history buff it is amazing to see how people lived centuries ago and learn about their believes, traditions and cultures and see how things have changed and how somethings are prevalant in todays society.
So all in all a great day, but very tiring as we hiked around the site for 5 hrs and climbed all to the ruins, so ive had my exercise for the day, now I need a beer....
Onto Belize......
