We decided to get the early boat off the island at 8am so we would be sure to get the bus at the port in Belize at 10am. Arrived with an hour to spare and bought some cheap sandwiches for $3 US. The bus again was spacious with air con and an easy journey of 2 and a half with a quick connecting taxi to Flores (make sure to avail of the only ATM there in the town when you stop.)
We stayed at another hotel Villa del Lago - this has been working out as a cheap option for us as a group of 4. What an incredible view of the lake we had on the balcony, definitely a far cry from hostels but I suppose we'll be staying in hostels from now on in so it was a nice final goodbye! We ate at Imperio restaurant which cost between 40-80 quetzals ($4-8 US) for dinner and drinks.
Early to bed, early rise again - 3am to be precise, for our Tikal tour. I was not expecting such an incredible experience, with such a small group and deserted views. Our guide was brilliant, he told us the history of the Mayan ruins and pointed out exotic animals (Howler monkeys were the most terrifying for me even though we didn't actually see one, you could just hear a dying-dinosaur-like sound over the whole area!) The ruins themselves were breathtaking, huge structures that we could climb and others that were still under conservation. The final ruin being 212 feet above the ground! Needless to say we had very tired legs by the end of the day and opted for the early bus return at 12.30.
We had a much needed nap before going out for dinner at Los Amigos hostel where a meal cost around $4 and drinks were $1 for happy hour (which lasted all night!) Great vibe at the restaurant really chilled, and great craic at the rooftop terrace bar with the locals playing flip cup and beer pong.
We booked our night bus to Antigua at 8pm for $45 for a first class ticket and takes approx. 11 hours but has wifi which will come in handy!
