Hi from Namibia the last leg of my adventure. The last week has been fantastic meeting up with Nic and Mark and having the luxury of a proper bed hot showers and even a bath! I really enjoyed my 10 weeks at Venetia and Karongwe with all the amazing wildlife interactions and meeting lots of new people but it is surprising how you do miss home comforts every now and again! I realised that I didn't put an awful lot on about Karongwe- it was very different to the first reserve largely as it was only a quarter of the size and there were 9 lodges on the reserve so occasionally you would bump into game drives. Seeing Shiluweni a beautiful male leopard being operated on was a unique experience as was touching a 6 week old rhino who had been abandoned by its mother and as it was near death the jackals chewed its ears off- it is now doing very well in a rehab centre but with the bandage around its ears looks like ET! I also completely forgot the bit about the Marieskop mountains by Blyde River Canyon- spectacular scenery. There I was helping out with small mammal research and we would gou out in the mornings seeing what mice shrews etc had been caught and then ether them, weigh and measure them before releasing them again. I have no problem with handling live mice and shrews now!!
So the 10 weeks came to an end and said goodbye to lots of people before heading down to Cape Town. Even in winter it's a fab city. We managed to get a clear enough afternoon to get up table Mountain with the assistance of the cable car and remain for sunset which was awesome. Also managed to fit in a trip to Robben Island for history and culture, Cape Point for scenery and whales (although whales were a bit sparse as a bit too early in the season). Oh and more penguins on Boulders Beach- very cute! The most entertaining day had to be the full day wine tour from Stellenbosch taking in 5 vineyards. Sampled some excellent wines (and brandy) and i think all three of us were quite merry by the time we hit the cocktails in the evening!
Nic and Mark have now gone on their way in the luxury of their 4 wheel drive with tent on the roof and i'm heading over to Swakopmund this afternoon. Very spookily I've just met a lady who is also on the desert elephant project and she comes from Wells! I'm not entirely sure what the next four weeks will have in store but I'm sure it will be a great experience! Take care and see you all in a few weeks.
