Hi again from Swakopmund, this may well be my last update from this trip as it is unlikely that i will be near civilisation before I return to the UK. On that note it is unbelievable to think that in three weeks time I will (should be) back in the UK... although it will be lovely to see you all as I'm sure you can imagine I'm not overly looking forward to returning.
So the last two weeks, more wall building and loads more elephants. That's the summary of it oh and fantastic scenery. The last group was a group of 13 of us mainly Brits, Americans, and Irish. the group was fine but certainly not one of the better groups as there were several people who were very loud and at times didn't know what dignity and respect were. My diplomacy was at times stretched as was my patience but luckily we all survived with no fallings out. The next group there's only 7 of us and it appears to be a more diverse group and hopefully a lot quiter!
The wall building went very well and we managed to complete two walls that had both been partially built. It's definetly getting hotter and the mopane bees are getting worse but it is still very very satisfying to build the walls and to see the progress that you make.
There's been a lot of elephant activity at base camp particularly when we have been back there and just about to have dinner. They know how to time it for maximum disruption. I think every evening that we were back there (4 in total over the last two weeks) we have been forced to flee to the rocks or the wooden platforms as they came through camp. A few of the bull elephants have been having a bit of a power struggle and there's been some extreme trumpeting going on and as it bounces off the hills it makes a very impressive and awesome sound. Last Sunday night a herd came right through camp and ripped down quite a lot of branches. At least two walked right over the spot where I had slept the night before- fortunately I hadn't gone to my bed roll yet that evening as I would have had a bit of an experience!
It's my last two weeks properly on the project and I'll be very sad to leave. In two weeks time I'm doing a 140 km trek to raise funds for EHRA. It's a trek through the desert over 6 days and it sounds like it will be amazing although I am slightly concerned over my lack of training for it. I'll let you know how it goes!
Hopefully all is well with you all.. I understand that the sun has come out in the UK today?? Wow- make the most of it. See you all in a few weeks :-)
