It is not everyday that you start a day by hiking up a holy site to overlook a city.
Right around the corner from out hotel is a path that leads up Arunachala believed to be one of two holy mountains that represent Shiva. Our brief hike took us up to a beautiful overlook where we could see the whole city and the temple we would later visit.
It is believed that Shiva settled an argument between Brahma and Vishnu over who is greater. Brahma (the creator) and Vishnu (the preserver) argued until Shiva stepped In by sending out a beam of light in both directions and said that whoever was the superior would find the end of the light. Since neither could find the end, Shiva proved his own superiority. Due to this story, this town has an enormous temple dedicated to Shiva (and the element of fire), lots of gurus, and many ashrams for those who have achieved enlightment. Last night we had a tour of Sri Ramana Ashram.
This relaxing hike was a nice start to a day that was also filled with interfaith opportunities at Annamalaiyar Temple and time learning about Quo Vadis Interfaith Center.
