After the joys of Koh Phangan we boarded yet another boat and set sail for Koh Tao splashing out 30p each ('don't say I don't treat you' we're Luke's exact words) on VIP seats. This basically meant you actually get a seat rather than practically sitting on the laps of dreadlocked Russians who haven't bathed in months and 'entertainment' which consisted of the horrendous movie Real Steel dubbed into Thai....FML. We soon arrived at our beautiful boutique hotel which was situated right on Sairee Beach and had a stunning view of the sunset.
New year's eve got off to at early start as we set off at 8.30am on a snorkelling trip around the island. Koh Tao is famous for being one of the best places for snorkelling at it didn't disappoint at all. We were cursed with the most brash, irritating American tour guide who insisted on speaking in broken English like the Thai people despite English clearly being his first language. He began to grate and eventually every sentence of his was met by the same reply from Luke: 'shut up mate or I'll throw you overboard'. He soon muted. The snorkelling spots were lovely and Mango Bay in particular was stunning and we spent lots of time around the reefs there. Our guide insisted that although it was called Mango Bay, no mangos grow there and it got its name because the water around it (which for the record was a deep blue) was the colour of a mango. Sounds like utter b******s.
I know I've described so many places as 'beautiful' but Koh Nangyuan is truly like paradise. It consists of 3 islands which are connected by white sand pathways that cut through the turquoise water. We made the steep climb to the viewpoint atop one of the island; me being a moany cow about the heat during the climb and Luke literally pushing me by the bum up each steep every time I slowed down. I am so glad he did because it was one of the most breathtaking sights I have ever come across.
When we returned we enjoyed some drinks on our balcony before setting off for fresh grilled snapper and cocktails right on the sea front. Along with many others, we made wishes and set off our sky lantern over the water before the firework show and beach party began. A truly wonderful place to see in the new year.
