Rounding up Athens; I decided (stupidly) to have a go at the nightlife on my 2nd last night. Everyone in the club smoked liked a chimney and the drink prices were ridiculous (7 euro for a midi of beer). Definitely not my favourite night out in the trip so far.
The night out didn't really aid my sickness either. I also woke up with conjunctivitis which is pretty awesome! So a day full of antibiotics and sleep was on the agenda. We met our new group for the greek islands later that night and spent the next day getting to know each other a little better before we cruised to Mykonos.
Mykonos. First impression was 'where are all the houses'. The place looked like a desert with a white-painted house with blue doors and shutters every 200 metres or so. Our hotel was pretty nice. Right on the beach (not that I went) and a nice pool and pool bar. The only problem, which I would soon encounter was that we were on the opposite side of the island to all the nightlife.
Most of the group had signed up for the 'Mykanos by night' tour. We headed into town where we did a bit of a walking tour before we had dinner at a restaurant by the water. Was pretty nice. After that Ed, our new tour manager, took us to a few pubs and clubs that he knew were good starters. The pick of the 3 was Scandinavian bar. Everyone in the group was in pretty good form by then.
Come 3 o clock it was decision time. The tour bus was heading back to the hotel or you could choose to do your own thing. I chose the latter and headed to a club called Cavo. Cavo and Club Paradise are the two biggest clubs in Mykonos. They usually don't open till about 1 o clock and they don't close till about 10. Cavo was pretty crazy. Was like a festival atmosphere, music was loud and heavy, and everyone was off their heads. Their drinks were the strongest mixes I've ever experienced to date. And keep in mind I've been to Thailand where their infamous buckets taste like rocket fuel. Mind you when you're paying 12 euro (18 aus) for a drink you would hope it's strong. Mykonos being famous for its partying, pulls some of the biggest dj's in the world so the music was awesome and I had a great night.
We left Cavo at about 6-630. We were warned earlier the previous day that there were only 30 taxis on the whole island so getting home may be a bit tough. We must have been still drunk when we decided that we would start walking home. The next 2 and a half hours was comfortably the most frustrating and psychologically damaging time of my life. We walked and walked and walked up windy roads searching for taxis or lifts of any sort. Whilst bloody I-Ties with their quad bikes were speeding by us and giving us grief. Reflecting on this traumatic time hurts so I'm going to leave it there, but we eventually made it home around 9-930. Straight to breakfast and bed.
The next day I woke up at 530 pm. So not really a day. I was officially nocturnal. The plan for that night was to catch the bus in with the tour group to Club Paradise. That wasnt leaving till 12 so we had time to smash happy hour at our pool bar and prepare for a big night. Club Paradise was probably even better than Cavo. The place might have been a bit smaller (still big) but there were places to talk if you wanted to. We were having an awesome night. So when it was time to leave at 5 with the bus me and a fair few others passed and decided to stay. Dancing while the sun rose till 730-8 in the morning. Me and Lewis have labelled it one of, if not, the best nights of our lives. Getting home was a mission once again. This time however we were smart enough to wait for a public bus. Got home in time for breakfast again then back to bed (sleep was tough finding with all the red bull consumed)
The plan for our final day was to hit Tropicana Bar on Paradise beach. That was kicking off mid-arvo so there wasnt time for a whole lot of rest. Tropicana Bar was slow starting. I went for a swim and chilled out, had a bit of an uncle merv (perv) and mocked all the fabios on the beach who loved the gym and themselves way too much to have equal rights in society I think.
After countless shots, everyone was in full swing and Tropicana was pumping. I would have liked to have stayed on when it was time to go at 930 but we were leaving for Santorini in the morning and I was satisfied with my Mykonos experience.
To be continued.. Lewis says hola, come stai
