After a packed day in Mumbai we took the first day in Jaipur at a pretty slow pace, partly because we were tired and also because I was still ill and had decided to go to see a doctor to sort out the stomach infection I had had for about two weeks. Luckily the hotel was really nice and clean, and there was a great rooftop restaurant to look over Jaipur from and take in some of the city.
The Dr's surgery was anything but clean- a nurse (some guy who Liz and I had genuinely thought had just strolled in from the street) - took my blood etc while making me lie on the filthy bed. When I asked the Dr later - who was really thorough and had a great sense of humour - weather the bed was clean he simply replied "not exactly - a little dirt, some bugs, but it won't kill you".
Liz's dad Iain met us at the hotel that night as he was joining us for the rest of our trip in the golden triangle, then Liz and Iain were travelling on further north for another couple of weeks after I left.
The next day we headed to actually see some of Jaipur. We had a tuk tuk driver (Bit of a squeeze with the three of us in the back!) take us around Jaipur. We saw the Pink City - literally what it says, a city made of pink clay/brick - to see the palace, an astronomy site which we didn't completely understand but was pretty interesting and the maharaja's tombs which were amazing and made out of marble. In the afternoon we were taken to a textile factory. Typical tuk tuk driver ploy for a bit of commission, but we were really gad we went there as we got to see the fabric factory where they had hundreds of meters of cotton hung up which was being printed. We also saw hand printing downstairs and the embroidery area. After a veryyy long sales pitch we went on with a much shorter stop at a jewelery place, then back to the dr's for my medication.
The next day we were leaving Jaipur in the afternoon. We had arranged for the same tuk tuk driver to pick us up at 9.30 to see the Amber Fort before we left but surprise surprise he didn't show up (had got his money out of us the day before). This didn't please the other drivers outside our hotel, but another took us to see the fort instead. It was massive and pretty impressive over looking the water and climbing up the mountain. At the top there was a film set there making a new bollywood film, which meant it was filled with throwns and drums and other props which had quite a nice effect as you could imagine how a lot of it would of looked when it was in use.
We then left for the 4 hour journey to Agra. On the way we stopped at Fatehpur Sikri - another fort just outside of Agra. This was all in the same pink brick that Jaipur was built in and was really picturesque, definitely worth the slight detour, and a nice way to break up the journey!
